One of my recent articles for the Loughborough Echo -
DA YA think I’m sexy? Scottish rocker Rod Stewart’s gig in Loughborough was a memorable one for one reader - but not necessarily for his music.
Annette Ellison, 55, of Duncan Way, contacted the Echo to say she remembers a host of stars coming to Loughborough, but Rod left the biggest impression in her family with his flirty after-show wind-down.
She said: “My husband and I were courting at the time, around 1971-72. I remember we saw The Sweet, The Hollies, ELO and a band called Juicy Lucy.
“My husband was also saying to me Rod Stewart And The Faces played, and Rod even chatted his sister Linda up.”
Not a megastar at the time, the gravel-voiced singer played at Loughborough University in his career’s early days as frontman of The Faces.
But hearing that he was one for the ladies even then, the Echo tracked down the object of his affections that night.
Lucky Linda Ellison, who also remembers The Hollies’ and the Swinging Blue Jeans’ performances, said: “He was playing with The Faces, and they were all there in the bar afterwards so they sat drinking with us.
“The band were saying to us this is ‘the’ Rod Stewart, he’s going to be really famous one day.
“We’ve always laughed about it since. I don’t regret it as a missed opportunity - I didn’t even think he was that good looking, so there were no shenanigans!”
Annette’s husband Paul said: “We all remember that in the family - my sister Linda went up there and Rod Stewart was playing, and he chatted her up at the bar.”
Rod Stewart was unavailable for comment as the Echo went to press.
