| Subject: The Grand Slambovians Do Halloween Sat Oct 29, 2011 1:25 am | |
| The 2010 Halloween Ball Alien Set (a very long name for a very long song) runs long, as medleys tend to do, and while they play very well, it lacks energy. Listeners may liken the first five minutes or so to Rocky Horror Picture Show musical numbers except the band can actually play their instruments well. Yes it's got a nice, spooky feel, put on your mask and grab your best ray gun and set it to stun, but it doesn't need to be halloween to enjoy The Grand Slambovians. The band has been very positively reviewed by Maverick Magazine - UK, Guitar Magazine, and other musicians a like, but with this song it is hard to hear exactly why that is. The first half of the song is good, but basic, with a classic rock feel, which is a good start, but if this is a listener's first time with The Grand Slambovians they are missing out on what makes them so entertaining. More than half of the medley comes from covers of classic rock greats David Bowie, and The Beatles. Yet other's people music doesn't seem to encapsulate all the fun, and uniqueness that The Grand Slambovians possess when playing original songs. The strangeness, and commingling of accordion, mandolin and trippy imagery is almost totally absent from their covers, which make up a large portion of the medley. Ziggy Stardust, and Across the Universe are played capably, but simply and with no nuance. A better example of the musicians of Slambovia would be Flapjacks From the Sky (A double album that was very well received) or their new album tiled :The New Album. In the medley listeners can hear the audience applauding, cheering for more, it sounds like a "you had to be there" situation.
