Whilst reading around for some Hallowe'en music inspiration, I read a recommendation by Battles' Tyondai Braxton about this freaky little composer, Gerard Grisey.

His work is the basis of spectralism, which is a branch of composition which less music, more sound evolving through time...

It's unsettling stuff.

Genius.

Personally, I'd like I Want You Back by the Jackson 5, or I'm Only Sleeping by The Beatles played at mine.

What would you like at yours?

Penguin Cafe Orchestra

THere's a dance track in or around the charts at the moment by Steve Mac called Paddy's Revenge.

The track is basically the brilliant Penguin Cafe Orchestra's Music For A Found Harmonium with a beat, so I though I'd post a track or two.

Even if you don't think you know the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, I'm sure you'll recognise these from adverts and incidental music.

Here are some of my favourites from the past year and a bit blogging to start off this thread.

I've penned a Classic Collection addition today for the blog to go up on a rainy day about Frank Zappa's Apostrophe.
One of the real selling points of the album is the comedy element - "don't go where the huskies go, and don't you eat that yellow snow" - something Zappa did so well.
But for every Zappa there's a dozen Gareth Gates featuring The Kumars At Number 42 - so I'd love to hear some of your favourite comedy music recommendations.

Obscure musical genres

Although I get sent a lot of big releases - the U2s and Coldplays - for reviewing on the blog, I also get sent some very strange stuff.

Nothing can beat being completely baffled when you open the post to find some Cuban hip hop or Kazakh country and western to listen to.

And it's nearly always worth a spin.

So I'd love to hear recommendations of some of the odder acts out there - any suggestions?
